Low budget tips

Visiting Amsterdam on a budget? We’ve got you covered! 🌍💡

Amsterdam is an amazing city — but it doesn’t have to be expensive.
Whether you’re attending the congress for several days or extending your stay, there are plenty of smart ways to save money on accommodation, food and transport without missing out on the real Amsterdam experience.

Below you’ll find practical budget tips, local hacks and affordable stay options to help you make the most of your visit — even on a tight budget. 👇

Budget accommodation

🏨 Airbnb & Short-Term Rentals

  • Airbnb apartments, private rooms or studios can be cheaper than hotels — especially if you share with friends or book early.
  • Filter for “private room” or “shared space” to reduce costs
  • Local listings include unique stays like canal houses, lofts or small studio
  • 💡Tip: Prices vary by season — expect around €70+ per night, or cheaper just outside the city centre

🚤 Canal Houseboats

  • Amsterdam’s iconic houseboats (woonboten) are also offered on Airbnb and similar platforms.
  • You can sometimes find stays from around €69 per night (excluding taxes/fees) — offering a truly local experience on the water.
  • Great for small groups or if you want a memorable stay that’s different from hotels.

🛋️  Couchsurfing & House Sitting

  • Perfect for very tight budgets and travellers who enjoy local connections.
  • Couchsurfing: connects you with locals who offer a free place to sleep — ideal if you’re on a tight budget and want a local’s perspective.
  • House sitting: free accommodation in exchange for looking after someone’s home (and sometimes pets).

Note: Both require good communication, respect for house rules, and careful planning with hosts.

🏘️Coliving & Long-Stay Houses

  • Some coliving spaces and hybrid aparthotels offer short-term stays with shared kitchens and workspaces.
  • Places like The Social Hub or hybrid aparthotels blur the line between living space and hotel, often with more flexible stays.

Camping

  • In July the wheather will hopefully be very good for a camping
  •  Camping around Amsterdam or in nearby parks can be a super cheap option

Extra Budget Hacks for Alternative Stays

💸 Extra budget tips!

  • Stay outside the centre (e.g., Amsterdam Noord, Oost, or even Haarlem/Utrecht) and use public transport; often significantly cheaper and still quick to reach city centre.
  • Student housing sublets can be available in summer/semester breaks — sometimes much cheaper than hotels or Airbnb. (experienced travellers report this strategy)
  • Book early or check for last-minute deals and direct contact with hosts for discounts — especially for Airbnb stays.

Cheap Eats Tips

🍽️ Cheap eat tips, that are still delicious!

  • Buy meals or snacks at local supermarkets like Albert Heijn, Lidl, Jumbo; ready-to-eat salads, sandwiches, snacks under €10, and get to one of the parks.
  • Try local classics like stroopwafels, herring, kibbeling from markets or stalls.
  • Lunch deals are often much cheaper than dinner menus.
  • To good to go: This app sells “surprise” food boxes from cafes, bakeries and shops at a fraction of the price — a lifesaver for cheap lunches or snacks

Transport on a Budget

Amsterdam is compact and easy to get around — no need for taxis 🚕

  • Walk or rent a bike: €8–15/day, or OV-fiets for ~€4.65/day
  • Public transport: use a GVB day pass or OV-chipkaart
  • Free ferries around Central Station (bonus: great views!)
  • Skip taxispublic transport + walking covers most of the city cheaply.

Other Useful Tips

🚰 Don’t buy bottled water, refill at:

  • the venue
  • your (hotel) accomodation
  • public toilets
  • cafés (totally normal to ask)

Buying water in tourist zones = unnecessary €€€

🚶 Walk 10 minutes away from tourist hotspots
Bars around Dam Square, Leidseplein and  the Red Light District are pricey.
Go a few streets out or to neighbourhoods like:

  • De Pijp
  • Oud-West
  • Oost

= Same vibes, much better prices!

🥐 Skip hotel breakfast
Hotel breakfast: €15–25
Bakery + coffee: €5–8 ☕🥐

🏛️ Group & student discounts

Some museums offer:

  • Group discount
  • Student or academic rates
  • Conference badges may help — always ask!

🌿 Free city experiences > paid attractions
You’re not missing out by skipping pricey tours:

  • Walk the canal belts at sunset
  • Take the ferry to Amsterdam Noord (free, great skyline views)
  • Visit markets (Albert Cuyp, Ten Katemarkt)
  • Relax in parks (Vondelpark after work hours is peak local life)
