The publishing industry has long been obsessed with the “youth market,” often overlooking the world’s most consistent, tech-fluent, and dedicated readers: the 50+ demographic. But as global life expectancy rises, we must move beyond viewing older adults as a niche demographic and start designing for a 100-year life.
In this plenary session, Michael Tamblyn (CEO, Rakuten Kobo) and Sander Knol (Founder, Xander Uitgevers) challenge the industry to stop treating aging as a decline to be managed and start treating it as a design imperative.
Drawing on insights from a new Global Coalition on Aging (GCOA) and Rakuten Kobo report, the analysis moves past the tired debate of digital versus print books to explore how ebooks, audiobooks and ereaders can act as an accessibility bridge, removing the friction that often forces older readers to stop reading. By applying the “curb-cut effect”—the principle that designing for the most accessible use case creates a better experience for everyone— to reading, we can build an ecosystem where the book remains a central pillar of lifelong learning.
Join us for a candid look at the practical, messy work of creating the experiences and services that support cognitive health through lifelong literacy, ensuring that the stories we love remain accessible at every stage of life.
