Agenda

The emphasis of this workshop is on photographic research methods. These include photovoice – where participants take photographs in their daily lives; photo elicitation – where participants discuss photographs with researchers; and more researcher-driven approaches, in which the researcher photographs participants and/or their environments.

By incorporating photography, research can explore complex questions more deeply and engage participants for whom verbal communication may be challenging, thereby making the research process more participatory and democratic.

This creative approach is particularly valuable for understanding how people perceive and interact with different places. It can also encourage reflection on ageing and place—among creators, researchers, and viewers of the visual material alike.

Objectives

The workshop will include an introduction to visual research methods (background and typologies), examples of how these methods are applied in practice, and participatory exercises that will enable participants to explore how visual methods can be integrated into their own research projects or areas of interest.
